Episcopal Palace at St. David's, from Twelve Views in South Wales 1775

Paul Sandby

* 1731, Nottingham † 1809, London

Etching and aquatint in grey. Size of sheet: 25.1 x 32.7 cm.

Literature:
Sloan (2000) 135;
Gunn 208 (I/V).

Fine impression of the first of five states, with narrow margins. Before considerable changes made to the sky in later states. Striking marbled effect in the wide aquatint border. Some slight abrasion in dark cloud (top left). After a drawing by amateur artist Revd. Dr. Luttrell Wynne (1739-1814). Wynne's drawing of the Episcopal Palace is in the National Library of Wales (Shelfmark Pembrokeshire (S) Size B). Though Sandby's version deviates significantly from Wynne's, Wynne is nonetheless credited in the imprint below the image 'to publicly advertise the assistance and patronage of such men'.[1]
