Three head studies of a child

Jean Augustin Daiwaille

* 1786 in Cologne † 1850 in Rotterdam

Black and red chalk on a cream laid paper. Size of sheet: 25.5 x 19.2 cm.

Provenance: Collection Watermare, 1864.

Signed in black chalk lower left 'J.A. Daiwaille fecit'.

This study was drawn after life, most probably after the artist’s very own child, given the intimacy of the studies.

Jean Augustin Daiwaille was a sought-after Dutch portraitist and the Rijksmuseum keeps several portrait drawings by him. He was the Director of the Academy of Drawing of Amsterdam and the founder of the lithography workshop Daiwaille and Veldhuyzen.
