Théodore Roussel
Transfer Lithographs

There are only eleven known transfer lithographs by Théodore Roussel (1847 Lorient –1926 Hastings), of which eight are featured in this exhibition.

Roussel was an experimental artist who pursued printmaking in varying techniques throughout his career. On moving to London in the late 1870s he forged a close friendship and working relationship with James McNeill Whistler. In the 1890s, guided by the printer Thomas Way, Roussel and Whistler began to experiment with the transfer method of lithography. The artists would create a crayon image on paper that would be transferred directly onto the lithographic stone by Way. This enabled the artists to avoid drawing directly onto a cumbersome stone. Roussel's transfer lithographs are now very scarce.
