Le jardinier et son seigneur 1818
* 1758 † 1836
Lithograph. Size of sheet: 25.8 x 35.8 cm.
Literature Dayot, no.166 (28).
The print is part of a set of 64 plates published by Engelmann and illustrates La Fontaine’s popular Fables (1818). This one tells of a gardener who, troubled by a hare, seeks the help of a nobleman, who comes the next day with a party of huntsmen, courts the gardener’s daughter, feasts on his food and wreaks havoc in the garden. The lesson of the story is for people to deal with their own issues and to not involve kings and princes in their disputes.
