Portrait of the artist Sofonisba Anguissola
* 1700 in Peterborough † 1766 in London
Etching. Size of sheet: 21.6 x 16 cm.
Inscribed with brown ink Roselba.
Literature: Dack 119 (Supposed to be Mrs Worlidge).
Excellent impression with large margins. The print is after the self-portrait from 1556 of Sofonisba Anguissola (Anguisciola) (c.1532-1625) (Lancut Museum, Poland).
It was long assumed that the face of the sitter had similarities of Thomas Worlidge's wife Arabella, the daughter of his master the Genoese Alessandro Maria Grimaldi (1659–1732), which one could confirm, by comparison with the portrait of Bust-length portrait of Arabella Worlidge, the Wife of the Artist, with Brush and Palette.
