Viennese Etchers around 1800
This small, exquisite cabinet exhibition showcases an area of printmaking from the Romantic Period that is seldom singled out from the rest of this era. The artists in the environs of Vienna at this time deserve to be focused on, just as the detail and refinement of their work merits close observation. Of interest are the different states of certain prints, tracing the artists’ practical and mental processes, along with the way that some chose to use coloured paper for a variety of effects. It is also possible to observe prevalent contemporary artistic tastes in these etchings – the landscapes, for instance, derive much from Dutch prints of the seventeenth century, particularly those of Rembrandt and his circle.
