Virgin and Child c.1645/55

Stefano della Bella

* 1610 in Florence † 1664 in Florence

Etching. Size of sheet: 14.8 x 12.4 cm.

Literature: De Vesme/Massar 1971, No.5 (knew only of a second state). Massar (addendum, 1996) No. 5 (first state).

Provenance: Raffaelle Alianello 1908-1988 (Lugt 5k).

Fine impression with large margins, some mount stain.

Extremly rare first state, before various changes, most notable before the Virgin's right arm was outlined and the sleeve was etched in.

Massar (1996) follows the cataloguing of an entry at Christie's (London 29-6-1977, lot 78), subsequently of that we know of only three impressions including ours. The Christie's impression was up for sale again at Antiche Stampe (Bologna, 2000, Cat. No. 28). The British Museum has also an impression of the first state, also not catalogued as such, yet (BM: 1871,0513.36).
