Interest of the portfolio format and its growing success as a singular way for collectors to acquire work by contemporary artists encouraged many printmakers and indepedent presses to develop projects of this type. Organized as a celebration of Irwin Hollander's collaboration with American artists working in the medium of lithography, the portfolio 9 is a compendium of images by nine of Hollander's artist collaborators. In addition to Motherwell, the artists participating in the project were Willem de Kooning, Sam Francis, Ellsworth Kelly, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Lindner, Louise Nevelson, Henry Pearson and Saul Steinberg.
