Karl Bodmer was a French-Swiss printmaker, draftsman and painter. He travelled with prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied to North America onboard the ‘Janus’. His lithographs depicting native Americans and their costumes and weapons were instrumental in shaping European perceptions of the peoples of North America. A friend of Théodore Rousseau and Jean-François Millet, he spent the second part of his life painting in Barbizon.
