Frederick Arthur Bridgeman was an American painter known for his Orientalist subjects. He moved to Paris in 1866 to study under Jean-Léon Gérôme. He often visited North Africa, amassing a vast collection of costumes, architectural pieces and objects which often feature in his paintings. Another copy of this image is in the collection of the LA County Museum of Art.
