Jules Claretie was a French novelist, playwright, journalist and historian. He was a member of the French Academy and for the last three decades of his life was director of the Comédie Française, where he was notably responsible for opening-up the theatre’s repertoire to contemporary plays. Alongside plays, he also wrote the librettos for three of Jules Massenet’s operas.
