Je marchais sur le bord même de la mer. 2016.

Judith Rothchild

* 1950 in Boston

In this fragment of his play, Eupalinos ou l’Architecte, Paul Valéry imagines Socrates in paradise telling Phèdre stories of his youth and his memories of walking on the beach with waves crashing at his feet.

The mezzotints by Judith Rothchild were inspired by winter walks on the beaches of Sables-d’Olonne, Half Moon Bay and Dillon Beach in California, Cape Cod and Cornwall.

This book won the prestigious Prix Jean Lurçat from the Académie des Beaux Arts de Paris in 2016.

The five continuous  plates each 25 x 40 cm are printed on Hahnemülhe paper by the artist. They are numbered and initialled.  The screen prints and embossments are also the work of the artist.

The hand-set letterpress, Vendôme romain, was composed and printed on Rives BFK paper by Mark Lintott on a Albion press of 1867.  He also created the clamshell boxes.

The colophon is numbered and signed by Judith Rothchild and Mark Lintott.
