Cinq moments chez Swann. 2000.
Judith Rothchild
* 1950 in Boston
Short texts from Marcel Proust’s L’Amour de Swann (Swanns Way) have inspired Judith Rothchild to produce five large mezzotints. The book is presented in the form of a folio with the text and prints on loose sheets. The twelve copies are all presented in striped blue screen printed clamshell box with a madeleine motif. The design is repeated on the original frontis. The five mezzotints, Tilleul, La Fenêtre, La Porte de Jardin, Faire Catleya, Le Violon, are nostalgic in mood reminiscent of nineteenth century photographs. All mezzotints and colophons are numbered and signed by the artist. Size of pages: 47 x 50 cm. Size of images: 25 x 30 cm.
The text in French, hand-set in Vendôme Romain, is printed on a 1867 Albion press by Mark Lintott. The clamshell boxes are by Claude Vallin.
Edition of XII. The first five copies, the deluxe edition I to V, include one of the original copper plates.
