Pomegranate. 1997.

Judith Rothchild

* 1950 in Boston

Pomegranate the prose poem by Ruth Fainlight, was written after she and her husband, Alan Sillitoe, returned from a visit to Majorca where they lived nearly thirty years earlier. The pomegranate and its reference to mythology is a recurring thread throughout the text which dwells on aging, friendship, and the passing of time. This original text is accompanied by six mezzotints by Judith Rothchild. The first, on the cover, is a whole pomegranate but gradually the fruit splits open until on the back there are just the seeds. Numbered and signed by the author and the artist. Edition of 50. Size: 39.4 x 27.3 cm.

The text was printed by Albert Woda and the mezzotints by the artist. The red slipcases are by Corinne Casse, and the clamshell boxes are by Claude Vallin.

The first 14 copies, the deluxe edition, include an extract of the poem in the hand of the poet and an original drawing by the artist.
