Prince Louis of Lorraine on a rearing horse. c.1621-24.

Jacques Callot

* c.1592 in Nancy † 1635 in Nancy

Etching and engraving. Size of sheet: 28.7 x 33.8 cm.

Watermark: coat of arms: a double coat of arms, with two fleur de lys above five spheres on left shield, eight divisions and a circle on the right shield, a Maltese cross at bottom, surrounded by clusters of circles/grapes?, the letters FALC at bottom in cartouche. Similar to Heawood 677.

Literature:   Lieure 505 (only state);

                    Meaume 508.

A very fine and deep black impression of the reworked plate and signs of wear in the landscape. The sitter's face seems to have been slightly reworked. A preparatory study for this print is in the British Museum (Gg.02.343.) and a more sketchy version is in the Metropolitian Museum (Inv. 2004.235).
