Femme de Lettres 1911-1912

Walter Richard Sickert

* 1860 in Munich † 1942 in Bath

Etching and engraving. Size of plate: 15 x 22.7 cm.

Signed in pen and ink, "Sickert (state)", and below plate destroyed. Watermark "J. H." partially visible.

Literature: Bromberg 149 (V/VII), illustrated p. 168.

One of two recorded impressions. Before the reduction of the plate and before all lettering.

The title of this print is intentionally paradoxical, as the "Woman of letters" is busy flirting with her lover more than with her reading stand. As suggested by the inscription, Sickert was apparently not satisfied with the image. However, after the reduction of the plate, the print was published by the Carfax Gallery in 1915.
