Full-length portrait of a man

Jan Josef Horemans I

* 1682 in Antwerp † 1759 in Antwerp

Red chalk, heightened with white chalk. Size of sheet: 35.7 x 23.5 cm.

Very fine and delicately executed drawing of an elegant man, reminiscent of French drawings from the first half of the 18th century.

After studying with the sculptor Michiel van der Voort the Elder and the painter Jan van Pee in the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke, Horeman became a master in the same Guild in 1706. Known for his genre paintings, portraits and historical allegories, he was the leading painter of contemporary everyday life in his native Antwerp.

One of the finest examples of Horeman's typical red chalk drawings, our sheet can be compared to several other studies of standing figures, such as A Physician Examining a Phial in the National Gallery of Scotland (inv. D 2766).
