The Astrologer

Ferdinand Bol

* 1616 in Dordrecht † 1680 in Amsterdam

Etching and drypoint. Size of sheet: 12.8 x 9.6 cm.

Watermark: Fragment of Fools cap.

Literature:  Hollstein 8.II

Fine precise lifetime impression with partly small margins around the platemark.

Ferdinand Bol was one of the few Rembrandt pupils who was a relevant printmaker. He executed more than twenty etchings. Bol entered Rembrandt's studio about 1636 after serving an apprenticeship with Jacob Cuyp in Dordrecht. He left Rembrandt around 1642 when he began working independently in Amsterdam. As an etcher Bol is known best from his early period, when the strong Rembrandtesque character can easily lead to confusion with the master's work[1], like the present impression.
