This is in essence the thank you letter to Prefect Berthaud of the Academie de Beaux-Arts, receiving the medal for being elected. Highly interesting that he mentions the Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres paintings on display. That could be read as a hint of dismay for Delacroix who had to face the Ingres painting, being widely known that both artists were in public dispute. Delacroix was not elected until January 10, 1857 to the seat of Paul Delaroche, after seven unsuccessful applications, as Ingres was opposing his election. Also after being elected Delacroix was not given the position of a professor at the Academie de Beaux-Arts.

Dear Mister Prefect, I received and appreciate the sending of the medal, coined by the municipality at the occasion of the painting of Mr Ingres. I happily acknowledge receipt and ask you for my part to receive my sincere thanks. Please be assured, Mister Prefect, of my high consideration. EugDelacroix

EugDelacroix .
