Dan Walsh
Dan Walsh is a painter, printmaker, bookmaker, and installation artist based in New York. Born in Philadelphia in 1960, he received his BFA from Uarts (formerly Philadelphia College of Art), Philadelphia, and his MFA from Hunter College, City University of New York. His work is included in public collections around the world, including the Fonds National d’Art Contemporain, Paris; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. It has been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe including at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in Long Island City; the New Museum in New York; the Centre National d’Art Contemporain in Nice; the Indianapolis Museum of Art in Indiana; the Speerstra Foundation in Lausanne; the Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art in Providence; and the Kunstverein Medienturm, Graz. His prints and limited-edition books were the subject of a one-person exhibition at the Cabinet des Estampes in Geneva, Switzerland. He was also included in the Ljubljana Biennial, Slovenia, the Lyon Biennial of Contemporary Art, France (both 2003), and the Whitney Biennial in Spring 2014. Walsh’s work is currently the subject of a major yearlong exhibition titled “Dan Walsh: Pressing Matter” at the Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht (NL), on view through January 12, 2020.
Marjorie Welish
Artist /critic Marjorie Welish received her first solo show thanks to Laurie Anderson, then curator of the Whitney Museum Art Resources Center; she has exhibited most recently in New York, London, Vienna, and Cambridge, England. In 2013 her art was included in “Spaces of the Book,” a conference on innovative artists’ books, Trinity College, Cambridge, and at the Galerie Peithner-Lichtenfels, Vienna. Collections include Brooklyn Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Smith College Museum of Art. She has received many grants and fellowships for her art: early in 2015 nominated for an award from Anonymous Was a Woman; and others, include: Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation, Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, The Fifth Floor Foundation, Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, Pollock Krasner Foundation, and Trust for Mutual Understanding (supporting an exchange between the International Studio Program, New York and the Artists’ Museum, Łódź, Poland). In July, 2010, she was an artist-in-residence at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2006, she received a Fulbright Senior Specialist Fellowship in art, to teach at the University of Frankfurt, where she also worked to complete a limited-edition constructed art book, Oaths? Questions?, in collaboration with James Siena, published by Granary Books in 2009; with a Fulbright, she taught and worked at the Edinburgh College of Art in the spring of 2010. Recently completed is Push Bar To Open, a video incorporating art intended to address the functional differences between an 18th-century residence in Edinburgh and what it has become: a 20th-century project space for art. Exhibited in Nanterre, France, early in 2017 was ”Paper Architecture: Urbanism,” a dialogue in drawings with Olivier Gourvil. Of the Diagram: The Work of Marjorie Welish (Slought) compiles papers given at a conference on April 5, 2002, at the University of Pennsylvania, devoted to her writing and art.
