Sander Bink, and Dick Veeze, Verfijnde lijnen: Carel de Nerée tot Babberich 1880-1909: Kunst en leven (Amsterdam: W Books, 2025).

Translated from the Dutch:

"The work of Carel de Nerée tot Babberich (1880-1909) is among the most fascinating that Dutch art from around 1900 produced. His oeuvre can be easily compared with the work of the greatest European artists of his time.

He is a well-known society figure about whom the wildest stories circulate. De Nerée comes from one of the most prominent families in the Netherlands. Alongside his diplomatic ambitions, he devotes himself fully to art. During his short life, he creates an impressive oeuvre of nearly 400 sheets. His work is utterly idiosyncratic, his linework immensely refined. A greater contrast between De Nerée’s daring depictions and the neat landscapes, cityscapes, and formal portraits that are the standard in Dutch art around 1900 is hardly conceivable.

He has been described as 'different from the others', a veiled way of denoting queerness in his time.

Based on material collected over decades by De Nerée expert Dick Veeze, supplemented by new research, Sander Bink sketches the true contours of one of the most enigmatic artists in modern Dutch art."
