Anna Maria van Schurman (1607 - 1678) was a scholar, poet, theologian and artist. Famous bluestocking, the first woman to attend university in Holland. Polymath, who worked in most art forms of the period, including pastel in which she was the first to work in Holland.
She also studied engraving, in which she was a pupil of Magdalena de Passe, and her famous self-portraits were made for private presentation. In later life withdrew into a religious seclusion. (BM)
