Ilya Efimovich Repin (1844 Chuguev - 1930 Kuokkala) was the most renowned Russian artist of the 19th century who created epic depiction of Russian reality in all its diversity. He was also a sought-after portraitist. During his life he managed to create a whole gallery of portraits of his contemporaries. Repin played a major role in bringing Russian art into the mainstream of European culture.
Gustav Frank studied engraving in Vienna and specialized in steel engraving. In 1890 he was invited to take up the position of the head of the drawings and engravings at the State Paper Preparation Expedition in St Petersburg, which was responsible for the production of both banknotes and all other paper with the state emblem.
