Arcadia
Arcadia: a fine selection of drawings by two contemporaries, Kobell and Chipart. These works come from a private collection assembled during the period of both artists.
German artist Franz Innocenz Josef Kobell’s (1749—1822) keenly observed landscape drawings are greatly influenced by Claude Lorrain. Created en plein-air, these expressive, immediate and finely detailed works were just as impactful when they were originally received, making Kobell as renowned in his time for his landscape drawings as he was for his paintings. His drawings were admired by Goethe and he was appointed court painter to Karl Theodor, Elector of Bavaria.
Born 1748 in Paris, J-P Chipart’s depictions of picturesque ruins are reminiscent of other French artists in Italy at the time, like Hubert Robert, Claude-Louis Châtelet, the Moreau family and Victor-Jean Nicolle. In his romantic compositions of Italian classical vistas, dramatic, cascading light permeates the idealised scenes. At the same time, his more mundane studies of trees and seascapes show an elegant stylisation, evocative in their restraint of line and description.
