Albert Oehlen
Prints and Multiples, 1981-1989
One of the most comprehensive presentations of Albert Oehlen's printed oeuvre, this exhibition unites over 50 prints, mostly artist's proofs.
Presented here, the subjects approached in the earlier works of 1984 are portraits of emotionless and stern figures. The woodblocks of 1985 show interest in architecture, as well strained figures and the bold simplicity of objects like a chair and a table.
In the later works from 1989, including the Untitled series of Trees, small inscribed faces hang like baubles on sharp, wiry branches. This theme speaks more broadly for Oehlen's oeuvre, in which the study of trees are central to his practice.
In other prints of the same period the imagery is less obvious. In the diptych, a comic format strip separates images of the Eiffel Tower, portraits, water taps, birds flying, and abstracted forms. This body of work comes from the series ‘Estrechiamento de mente’ (Narrow-minded), a phrase we see in a text-based work alongside other words as ‘coffee’, ‘brake’, ‘bitch’, and ‘wake-up’, on a deconstructed box.
