'Mortimer's mythological and allegorical designs in his personal version of the sublime manner constitute an intriguing episode in the development of eighteenth-century taste. Based in part on the more bizarre elements of Italian Mannerist painting, especially that of the School of Bologna, they also contain a strong element of exaggeration and even caricature. It has been observed that Mortimer's style, with its dynamic linear quality and its blend of passion and grotesque humour, greatly influenced the development of English caricature artists such as Gillray.'
