Provenance: with Thomas Agnew and Son (according to a label on the reverse)

Two other versions of this drawing are in existence, the closest of which to the present drawing is in the Sir Robert Witt collection at the Courtauld Institute. The other version was sold at Sotheby's, 19 June 1980, lot 73.
Antonio Senape trained as an architect, and with this became an artist/draughtsman, specialising in topographical drawings of townscapes, landscapes and panoramas, architectural ruins and ruins, for tourists visiting Rome and Southern Italy. He worked mainly in inks.
