Jørgen Roed

* 1808 in Ringsted † 1888 in Copenhagen

Etching. Size of plate: 20 x 25.6 cm. Size of sheet: 27.7 x 35.5 cm.

Fine impression with wide margins. Signed and dated on the plate in reverse J. Roed 1836.

Etching after the painting by Roed with the same title, dated 1834-36 (Horsens Kunstmuseum, Inv. 274).

Roed was a pupil of Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg and there is no doubt that Eckersberg's Roman steeet scenes were influential in giving Roed an interest in architectural painting. The circumstance leading to this painting was a competition held by Copenhagen's Arts Society. Roed travelled to Frederiksborg with Christen Kobke. While Kobke threw himself into a full depiction of the castle, Roed chose to focus on a smaller detail.
