Nacre. 2010.

Judith Rothchild

* 1950 in Boston

Nacre, a collaboration between the poet Ruth Fainlight and the artist Judith Rothchild, is published in in the form of a leporello. All the books are numbered and signed on the colophon by the author and artist. Edition of 50. Size: 26.7 x 23.5 cm.

The eight mezzotints were printed on Hahnemülhe paper by the artist. The hand-set letterpress in Vendôme Romain was printed on an Albion press of 1867 by Mark Lintott. He also made the slipcases and boxes incorporating marbled paper created by the artist.

Numbers one to eight, the deluxe edition (1/50 to 8/50), are presented in a clamshell box and include one of the original copper plates and a nacreous shell. Numbers 9/50 to 50/50 are presented in slipcases. Numbers 45/50 to 49/50 are hors commerce. Number 50/50 is reserved for the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.

We would like to thank Alexandre Dewez who, wishing to honour the memory of his friend, the pearl specialist, Jean Taburiaux seeded the idea for this project. The pearl oyster images were created after shells from his collection.
