Like Roed, Kyhn was also a pupil of Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg and was influenced by his classicism. Trained as a copper plate artist, he then chose etching as his favourite medium and was one of the driving forces behind the establishment of The Danish Etchers Union (Den danske Radeerforening) in 1853.
