Chevaux de Ferme (The Farm Horses) 1823

Jean Louis André Théodore Géricault

* 1791 in Rouen † 1824 in Paris

Crayon lithograph. Size of sheet: 28.8 x 41.6 cm.

Literature: Delteil 73, IV.

                 École nationale supériore des Beaux-Arts, 1997-1998, E.84.

From Plate 1 of "Suite de Cinq Lithographies" published in Paris in 1823 by Mme Hulin, rue de la Paix no.21. According to Delteil, the series was originally intended to comprise four prints, as indicated by the series title which is printed on the front cover.

Géricault’s deep love of all things equine was satiated on his arrival in England in April 1820, with his introduction to English equestrian painting. However, beyond the formality and somewhat rigid tradition of this genre lay an additional source of inspiration for the Frenchman, who whilst spending time in London, became increasingly fascinated with the subject of draft-horses.

The lithograph is after a drawing by Géricault which was recently on the Swiss art market.
