A Village Fair. 1685

Cornelis Dusart

* 1660 in Haarlem † 1704 in Haarlem

Etching.

Size of sheet: 25.2 x 33.2 cm. Watermark: Arms of Amsterdam.

Literature: Hollstein 16 (II/III).

Provenance: Collection of Neville D. Goldsmid (1814-1875), The Hague (Lugt 1962).

A good, early impression with thread margins all around of Dusart’s most celebrated print. The watermark is consistent with that found on the earliest impressions of both this image and the Violin-Player Seated in the Inn (Hollstein 15), also dated 1685. In very good condition, aside from a vague old crease extending from the top through the parasol at center, minor toning, and an unobtrusive 1/8” tear at top right.
