"The series "Theater", which consists of fifty-two drawings, is not connected to any specific play, but relates rather to the very idea of performance and spectacle. The actors in this series quarrel, jest, pretend. But from time to time ghosts and fiends appear in front or behind them, and the viewer can never be certain whether these creatures are also actors and part of the performance, or not actors at all, but real fiends, who, in fact, did creep in from another world."
