The image is inspired by (rather than copied from) the famous painting by Frans Hals of the same title (1629-30), now at the Staatliche Museum in Berlin (Grimm, 65).
Hals’ works are rarely copied by printmakers. Coclers tries to capture Hals’ pastose painting style with this freely etched plate.
