Carel de Nerée tot Babberich
Symbolist Drawings

Carel de Nerée tot Babberich (1880 Zevenaar Babberich - 1909 Todtmoos) was a bohemian symbolist artist and society figure. His decadence of character and artistic oeuvre speak to his comparison with artists such as Aubrey Beardsley, Jan Toorop and Gustav Klimt.

An artist who never exhibited in his own, short, lifetime and who has been somewhat overlooked for years, he has recently recaptured attention. The exhibition "Carel de Nerée. Anders dan de anderen" ["Different from the others"] at the Dordrecht Museum (2025) and his inclusion in the 2020 "Aubrey Beardsley" exhibition at the Tate Britain exposed De Nerée to a wider audience. This profile has only been enhanced by the publication of Sander Bink's new catalogue raisonné, Verfijnde lijnen: Carel de Nerée tot Babberich 1880-1909 Kunst en leven (2025).

Given the small size of his oeuvre, this will be one of the most substantial displays of his rare works for sale.
