Jupiter blasting the Giants. c. 1680.

Pietro Santi Bartoli

* 1635 † 1700

Etching after Giulio Romano (1499 Roma – 1546 Mantua). Size of sheet: 20.3 x 29.3 cm.

Literature Le Blanc 62 (from the set of eight);Massari 269.I.

Provenance An unknown collector’s mark in brown ink E.G., verso, probably

19th century (not in Lugt).

Very fine proof impression before the number, with small margins all around.

This proof impression is from the set of eight after Giulio Romano’s frescoes of the Giant’s Room in the Palazzo del Te in Mantua. Those paintings, made in 1532–34, are famous for the daring use of space and the intentional distortions of the giant’s faces.

This etching reproduces the fresco of the south wall of the room, where the giants are blasted and crashed with rocks by the angry Jupiter.
